Why does my furnace smell like burning when it turns on?
A burning smell the first time a furnace runs for the season is usually dust burning off the heat exchanger, and it is harmless if it fades within a few minutes. A burning smell that persists, gets worse, or smells like plastic, rubber, or hot wire insulation is different: that is the smell of a part failing, and the right move is to shut the furnace off at its switch and get it looked at before the next cycle.
The harmless one: first-start dust
Six months of summer dust settles on the exchanger and the blower. The first October call for heat cooks it off. The smell is dry and dusty, it clears in one or two cycles, and the air from the registers is warm. If that describes the house, change the filter, let it run, and stop worrying. This is the most common version of the smell in Green Bay, where furnaces sit idle from May through September.
The ones that need a technician
A smell that keeps coming back every cycle points at a blower motor running hot, a belt if the furnace is old enough to have one, or debris that actually got into the ductwork or the cabinet. A sharper electrical or plastic smell points at a failing blower motor, a melted wire at the control board, or a transformer. Those faults get worse fast and they can end in a fire, so the furnace switch goes off first. If there is smoke from any register, shut it down and leave the room.
What to say when you request a visit
Three details speed the visit up: how long the smell lasts, whether it happens on every cycle, and what it smells like, dust versus hot plastic. A first-cycle dust smell needs at most a filter and a look. A persistent electrical smell is usually a blower motor or board repair, typically in the few-hundreds range for the metro, and the company confirms the fault and price before replacing anything.
Carbon monoxide alarms do not detect smoke, so do not read a silent CO alarm as all-clear on a burning smell. If the smell is sharp and electrical, shut the furnace switch off and use the request form, noting the house is without heat; those visits get lined up first.
