Furnace maintenance checklist for a Green Bay winter

Before the first hard freeze

The worst week to discover a furnace problem in Green Bay is the week it drops below zero and every heating company is already booked. Most of the failures that show up in January were visible in October.

The checklist worth doing yourself

Replace or clean the filter. Check that the thermostat wakes the furnace and that the heat setting actually starts the burner. Clear anything stored against the furnace and the return grille. Walk the outside vent and intake and clear leaves, snow, or a drifted cover. If you have a condensing furnace, check the condensate line and the drain pan. Test the carbon monoxide alarm on the same day.

What belongs to a technician

Cleaning the burners, checking the heat exchanger for cracks, measuring gas pressure, verifying the inducer motor and pressure switch, and inspecting the flue are not homeowner jobs. Any of those done wrong is a safety problem rather than an inconvenience.

Tune-up timing that actually helps

Book the tune-up in early autumn, before the first cold snap fills the schedule. A furnace that has not been serviced in several years is the one most likely to fail on the first cold night, and also the one where a tune-up finds the failing part early.

If the furnace is already short-cycling

That is a different problem from maintenance. Read why a furnace keeps turning on and off, or request a visit from the desk and we will line up a local company.

Schedule a visit

Tell us the community, the age of the unit, and what it is doing. We line up an independent local heating company. The price ranges on this site are typical for the metro, not quotes.
