What a furnace tune-up actually includes
The parts that make it a tune-up
Burner cleaning and adjustment, flame sensor cleaning, heat exchanger inspection, inducer motor and pressure switch check, flue inspection, gas pressure measurement, blower check, and a combustion or CO reading. A visit that only swaps a filter and vacuums the cabinet is a filter change with a service call attached.
Questions that separate the two
Ask what the technician will measure, whether the heat exchanger gets inspected, and whether you get a written report. A real tune-up produces findings; a filter change produces a bill.
When a tune-up is worth it
An annual autumn tune-up is worth it on any furnace old enough to have a heat exchanger worth inspecting, and it is the cheapest way to catch a failing part before a January failure.
When it is not
A furnace that was serviced three months ago, or a visit sold purely on a coupon with no inspection scope, is usually not worth the money.
Booking one
Describe the unit and the last service date and we will line up an independent local heating company. The desk is free; the company prices the work.
